Comic-Con International
A California nonprofit founded in 1970 and headquartered in San Diego, Comic-Con International is held annually in July at the San Diego Convention Center and draws hundreds of thousands of attendees.
Comic-Con International began as a small gathering in 1970 and was formally established as an annual convention. In 1972 it was called San Diego's West Coast Comic Convention, becoming the official San Diego Comic-Con in 1973. The organization changed its name to Comic-Con International: San Diego in 1995 to reflect its expanded scope beyond comics to include film, television, and popular culture. Since 1991 it has been held at the San Diego Convention Center, and today it ranks among the largest cultural conventions in North America.
The convention serves as a gathering point for creators, fans, and the entertainment industry, with programming that spans comic books, graphic novels, films, television, animation, science fiction, and fantasy. Comic-Con International is a California nonprofit corporation with a stated mission to foster appreciation and awareness of comics and related popular art forms. The organization also operates the Comic-Con Museum, presents film festivals, and administers industry awards.
