Health classes explained
An overview of Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard: what the categories mean and what determines where an applicant falls.
Term life premiums are established according to rating tiers. Company names vary marginally, yet the hierarchy remains consistent: Preferred Plus (sometimes labeled Excellent or Preferred Elite), Preferred, Standard Plus, and Standard, with additional adjustments for above-average risk. Applicants who use tobacco have access to a parallel tier system at elevated rates.
What underwriters look at
Physical measurements and body composition, blood pressure and lipid levels, family medical history regarding cardiovascular events or malignancies before turning 60, driving history, medication record, career field and recreational pursuits, and tobacco or nicotine habits. Premium qualification requires excellent results across most factors; Preferred class permits some variation; Standard Plus and Standard accommodate well-managed chronic conditions including controlled high blood pressure.
How to use the quote tool
On the health assessment, describe your status accurately: Excellent corresponds to Preferred Plus, Very good to Preferred, Good to Standard Plus and Average to Standard. The pricing reflects that tier, though the carrier will confirm the final tier following underwriting. When uncertain, run quotes for different tiers to contrast, then allow the actual application to finalize classification. Selecting an inflated health rating does not decrease final cost; it only makes the estimate less trustworthy.
Susman Insurance Agency can support you in identifying carriers whose qualification guidelines are more favorable for particular medical situations—a consideration that frequently outweighs published starting rates.
